To Resolve or Not to Resolve: That is the Question

Dec 27, 2022

Wow! The new year is just a few short days away. Many of us are beginning to think about (or have already laid out a plan for) ways we can change and improve in the coming year. Maybe we want to lose weight, stop a bad habit, or start a new hobby. We often see the start of a new year as a time to make positive changes in our lives. But are new year’s resolutions a good idea?

Think about it!

On one hand, making resolutions can be a good way to set goals and motivate ourselves to make positive changes. Setting specific and clear goals can help us focus and track our progress. Telling others about our resolutions can also help us stay on track.

On the other hand, research has shown that many people struggle to keep their resolutions and give up on them within just a few weeks or months. One reason for this might be that people make unrealistic or too ambitious resolutions, which sets them up for failure. Another reason might be that people don’t have a clear plan or support for achieving their goals.

So, what’s the best way to approach new year’s resolutions?

One way is to be careful and set realistic and achievable goals. Make sure to have a plan and strategy for achieving your goals, and get the support and encouragement of friends, family, or a coach or mentor.

Another option is to skip traditional resolution-making and instead focus on making small, incremental changes throughout the year. This can be a more sustainable and achievable approach, and it allows for more flexibility and adaptability.

Ultimately, the best approach to new year’s resolutions is one that works for you. Whether you decide to set specific goals or make small, incremental changes, it’s important to be honest with yourself about what you can realistically achieve. Be prepared to adapt and change your approach as needed. By taking a thoughtful and strategic approach to goal-setting, you can increase your chances of success and make meaningful progress towards the things you want to achieve.

Questions

  • What are your goals for the new year? Do you have them?
  • How will your resolutions benefit you and those around you?
  • How will you celebrate your successes and accomplishments along the way

So, should you or shouldn’t you make New Year resolutions? If you choose to do so, a careful and strategic approach is best. This includes setting realistic and achievable goals, being prepared to adjust as needed, having a clear plan and strategy, and seeking support from others.

Happy New Year!
