Endorsing Weakness? What?

Aug 30, 2023

I recently came across the book, The Portable Coach, by Thomas Leonard. What immediately caught my attention while scanning the table of contents was this: “Endorse Your Worst Weakness”. At first glance, I thought… “Wait. What?” But then I realized the truth. We often take one of two tacts: (1) Ignore our weakness, or (2) Work on our weakness. Neither of those will serve us well. Why not embrace the fact that we are weak in an area, and then manage that weakness, and bring others who are strong into the mix. That’s where we are going today.

Today’s Theme: Endorsing Weakness

Quote

“Our strength grows out of our weakness.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

– St. Paul (2 Corinthians 12:9)

“In a very real sense not one of us is qualified, but it seems that God continually chooses the most unqualified to do his work, to bear his glory. If we are qualified, we tend to think that we have done the job ourselves. If we are forced to accept our evident lack of qualification, then there’s no danger that we will confuse God’s work with our own, or God’s glory with our own.”

― Madeleine L’Engle, Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art
